Julia Seymour her Life in Art.
It’s all about the Journey. In my early years, drawing and painting was always a favourite past-time and the love of art has continued throughout my life.
My time in Barbados and the Caribbean has extended far beyond the time spent in the UK - my place of birth. Anyone coming to the Barbados cannot fail to be impressed by the explosion of colour, the beauty of the island and fall in love with it.
My inspiration to paint comes from traveling around the island seeking out or stumbling across images of stunning landscapes, dramatic skies and charming local scenes. The creamy white sand beaches, reefs and sea-life, the clear turquoise ocean, the lush tropical forests are our playground and places to sketch and paint. These images provide a wide range of ideas which can be developed into subjects to paint. I look for shapes and shadows which are important and help to make the painting come alive.
The atmosphere and these images help to create “the magic”.
My painting and experimentation with many different techniques learned from attending workshops and tutorials - began as an enjoyable social past time and has developed into a passionate pursuit.
I generally use acrylic medium but to branch out into something different, in the last few years I’ve been experimenting with coloured inks and using wax resist to create pieces with the impression of movement and the exciting merging of colours. I have developed an individual style using this method which has proved to be quite popular.
On my regular visits to the UK and as a member of Gainsborough House Print Workshop I have enjoyed experimenting with many different styles of printing particularly screen printing and have had the benefit of making use of their extensive printing equipment and informative tutorials.
As a Member of the Barbados Arts Council, I am involved with the many art activities on the island - participating in Artists Alliance Barbados and Treasurer of Art Studio Tours Barbados. Also a member of Gainsborough House Print Workshop in Sudbury, Suffolk, UK.
My work has been shown in many galleries and exhibitions and has found new homes in Barbados, UK, USA, Germany, Canada and some Caribbean Islands.
This friendly isle has influenced my artistic style and colour palette. Take a look at my work, the “Barbadiana” series features many interesting and colourful local scenes.
